He graduated fifth in the West Point class of May 6, 1861, and went almost immediately to the front as a lieutenant of artillery, where he was badly wounded at 1st Bull Run.
His gallantry here earned him the rank of brevet major in the Regular Army and the Medal of Honor.
Appointed colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry, he led his troops in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.
On May 20, 1863, he was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers and later led a brigade in General O.O. Howard's 11th Corps at Gettysburg.
He also participated in the capture of Fort Fisher, N.C.
Ames was the last survivor of the full rank generals on either side in the Civil War!
