"Fort Concho Texas
Oct. 27, 1870

Captain Clarence Mauck
Fourth U.S. Calvary
Dear Sir,

I take pleasure in making the following statement in answer to your letter of this date. I have been intimately acquainted with you since the spring of 1866, during a considerable part of which time you have been under my command.
Knowing you as I do, I am certain that the efforts you fear is being made to place you on the list of unassigned officers is either a mistake, or that those making it are unacquainted with the following material facts, viz.

That you have seen more active service with the regiment as an officer than any other officer belonging to it, never having been detached since your entering it in 1861.

That you are known by your associates to be an honorable man and a gallant officer. That you are temperate in your habits, and of good moral character.

That you were twice brevetted for gallantry in action, having also been wounded whilst leading a charge against the enemy immediately after the fall of Atlanta.

That your company is well disciplined, and will compare favorably in this respect with most of the companies in the Army.
You are at liberty to use this letter as you may find to your vantage. I am
Very truly
Your friend
Jno. P. Hatch
