A note from the regimental history.

None of us will ever forget our thorough medical examination by Surgeon Kneeland; how he stripped, pounded, pinched, and pulled us, examining every limb, bone, muscle, and tooth, tested our hearts and lungs, accepting only those he could pronounce " sound as a new silver dollar". "Benjamin T Kneeland late Surgeon of the Nineteenth New York Cavalry for assiduous and unwearied services to the wounded while in the skirmish line during the war to date from March 13 1865"
