Incredible Funeral Notice- March,1808- Territory of Orleans Attorney General killed in a Duel!

“It is with deep regret we record the death of John Ward Gurley, Esq., late Attorney General of this Territory, who fell in a duel with Philip L Jones, Esq., yesterday afternoon. He was shot dead in the first fire, and Mr. Jones received a flesh wound in his leg. His death is sincerely regretted by his numerous and respectable acquaintances and friends.”

Incredible imprinted funeral notice-dated March 4th,1808 for the 29-year-old former Territory or Orleans (Louisiana) Attorney General who was killed in a duel the afternoon before. Seems the young "Major" (appears to have been an honorary title) John Ward Gurley could have used some more time at target practice!
He had entered Yale College where he received the degree of Master of Arts in 1799, two years earlier than it was generally conferred. His name can be found in the triennial catalogue of Yale College in the list for 1799, of the Honorarie es Alibi Institute. He was a recess appointment by President Thomas Jefferson in 1805.
The graphics are just incredible, and the funeral details are printed in both English and French. It measures 7" x 9.5" and is in fine condition.

"JOHN WARD GURLEY, of Lebanon, Conn., afterward of Boston, Mass., and New Orleans, La., was married to Grace Stackpole, daughter of William Stackpole of Boston, Mass., 1800. Mrs. Grace Gurley died of fever in New Orleans, La., 1804.

Mr. John Ward Gurley was killed in a duel on March 3, 1808, age 29 years.

Children of John Ward Gurley and Grace Stackpole, his wife, one only: The Hon. John Ward Gurley (son of Rev. John Gurley, a graduate of Yale College, 1773, and Mary, his wife) was born in 1778, having entered Yale College, he received the degree of Master of Arts, in 1799, two years earlier than generally conferred. His name will be found in the triennial catalogue of Yale College in the list for 1799, of the " Honorarie es Alibi Institute." Mr. Gurley was appointed by President Jefferson as Attorney-General for the district of Louisiana (of which the present state of Louisiana is only a small portion), with his place of residence at New Orleans.
