”To Rufus R. Dawes
Late Col. 6th Wis. Vols.
Marietta, Ohio

Washington D. C.
My dear Colonel. September 2, 1864
Yours of the 24th is received, and would have been answered before had it not been mislaid.
I was glad to see that your life has been preserved amid the heavy loss is your regiment has suffered. A report was current for some time that you were killed and we were all glad to hear of your safety.
Just as the public printing office was about to publish the Reports of the Battle of Gettysburg a resolution passed Congress requesting the Sec. War to publish

All the Reports of all the battles. The printing of my report is suspended until those antecedent to it are revised corrected and published in order that it may take its appropriate place.
I very much regret this as all the facts connected with the first days battle will be swamped in the immense mass of material accompanying it.
I cannot say when the work will be concluded. But the public printer thinks it will not be very long now before it will leave the press.
With my best wishes for your good health and continued prosperity I remain
Yours very truly
A. Doubleday”
