Rare Currier & Ives Print: "Darktown Fire Brigade" -used for Fire Equipment Sales
1894 Currier & Ives Print: "THE DARKTOWN FIRE BRIGADE - A PRIZE SQUIRT." One in a series of stereotypically derogatory images of blacks from the end of the 19th century, illustrated by Thomas Worth for Currier & Ives.
This comical depiction of a dark-skinned squad of firemen jumping on a pump wagon while squirting a hose was utilized as an advertisement for "Rumsey & Co."--a manufacturer of "pumps, and fire engines, hook and ladder trucks" in Seneca Falls, NY.
Measures 12" x 16," a bold colored lithograph. A repaired small tear along the right lower margin. Would frame nicely.
